A bratwurst is a sausage usually composed of veal, pork or beef. The concept was originated in Germany. “Brat” means finely chopped meat in German. Brats are usually grilled or cooked in broth. Homer and Petronius have written about brats in their famous tales. Germany first talks about brats in 1313. Nuremberg is renowned for the production of grill sausages.

There are over 40 varieties of German Bratwurst and how they are served varies from region to region. Most are served with nothing more then some hot mustard or even on a white bread roll. In the pubs they are served with sauerkraut or potato salad.

In the United States of America the German immigrants brought this wonderful tube of meat for all to enjoy. Once here we took the Bratwurst and turned it into “The Beer Brat”. Add some onions, butter and maybe a bell pepper and you got one of the most popular backyard party dishes in the country. Back in the 20’s Wisconsin was the butcher’s paradise for custom brats. In the 50’s Bill Sperling introduced bratwurst to Major League Baseball in Milwaukee County Stadium. It spread throughout the MLB for the next decades. Today Miller Park is the only stadium the sells more brats then hot dogs.

The Bratwurst Capital of America is the town of Bucyrus, Ohio. They hold a 3 day festival every year. Tons and tons of brats are consumed along side craft shows, rides, games and of course beer gardens. Oktoberfest in Germany ends on the first Sunday in October which is September 17 to Octobers 3 this year. The first Oktoberfest was not really a festival at all, but the public celebration of the wedding of Crown Prince Luitpold I and Princess Theressa of Bavaria. Today it’s Munich vs. Cincinnati trying to become the world’s largest Oktoberfest cities. Combined over 10 million pints of beer are consumed along side 800,000 brats.

The United States is now the most popular places in the world to get a good brat. Strangely enough we are also the leaders in beer manufacturing and consumption.
