Annual Ridgewood Ranch ride and barbecue scheduled October 3

The annual benefit ride and barbecue for the Ridgewood TRAIL Riders Association, a therapeutic horseback riding program for children with special needs, will be held October 3 at Ridgewood Ranch.

The association is a 501©3 nonprofit program dedicated to serving communities in Mendocino and Lake counties. TRAIL has existed for 16 years and has been a year-round program for more than two years.

TRAIL not only provides therapeutic riding for children with special needs, it also provides horse camps for at-risk youth. A 4-H program, TRAIL is seeking to obtain insurance that will enable them to meet the special needs of adults in the community as well as children.

The October 3 event will consist of three parts: the ride, the barbecue and the Seabiscuit tour. Visitors may attend all or part of the event.

The ride will start at 9 a.m. and run for three hours. There are four different rides, categorized by riding ability and horse condition.

A tri-tip or chicken barbecue begins at 12:30 and runs until 2 p.m. The menu will feature fruit and veggies grown in Ridgewood's organic garden.

Seabiscuit tours start at 2 p.m. Those taking the tour will visit historic ranch buildings, the Howard family home, and several stables in various stages of restoration.

They'll also see a short film on the legendary racehorse and the ranch.

Anyone interested in riding needs to fill out and return an entry form by September 30; spaces are limited.

Entry forms are available at Flowers by Annette or J.D. Redhouse, Black Horse Tack in Redwood Valley, and Mendocino County Farm Supply in Ukiah.
