Getting the Grill Started

We have all had the same issues getting the charcoal going. Half the time you’re not even sure the coals are going. What most people do like our fathers did in the past, is pour a gallon of lighter fluid over the coals and let the fire reach the sky. Not always the best method. First off you could set fire to yourself and the near by trees. Plus at times you have a funky taste to the meat. The best way to stay safe and have perfectly lit coals is using a Chimney starter.

A Chimney starter is a simple metal tube about 6 inches wide with a heat protected handle. The charcoal or briquettes are places in the chimney with a newspaper or your choice of fire starter method (besides lighter fluid). Put the firer starter at the bottom of the chimney and place the coals on top. Put the chimney on the grill grate and light the starter. Wait about 20 minutes and you’ll have a chimney full of lit coals ready for your BBQ. The vertical shape of the chimney funnels the heat upwards so the coals ignite uniformly every time. Once you have the coals glowing dump them in the Q and enjoy your BBQ.

The chimney starter will save you time and peace of mind. Every grill master should have on in their BBQ kit. It’s light weight and can be taken to tailgating events, backyard parties and anywhere else you get your BBQ on.

Stay Safe Note: Never put the chimney starter on wood or plastic surfaces. It get very hot and you should always use heavy gloves when handling.
